This year, nearly a 100 dance bars and discos will have their doors open for patrons, as opposed to 25 a year ago.Though the police dept has been liberal with approvals, make no mistake: Restrictions are still in place

Tis the season to be merry, to waltz, salsa, hip-hop, ape the Gangnam style… and the cops are doing nothing to make all of that difficult. On the contrary. Bangalore now has 100-odd dance bars and discos, a majority of which have reopened with necessary approvals. Say hello to good times and kiss nanny culture goodbye.
Additional commissioner of police, law and order, T Suneel Kumar, told Bangalore Mirror: “Bangalore is getting back into the party circuit. Yes, we have given more licences to dance bars and discotheques compared to last year, but there has been no relaxation of rules. All licences were approved with certain conditions.’’
According to an official estimate, there are 67 live bands and 32 discotheques functioning in the city as opposed to the 25 about a year ago. In fact, the crackdown on watering holes and dance bars operating without licences was so severe last year that the city’s nightlife and party circuit ground to a halt, leaving Bangaloreans raving and ranting about the Cinderella hour.
This year, however, police started clearing applications pending since 2005 and fixed a strict 11.30 pm closure hour. Without relaxing rules, they’ve even considered applications that were rejected earlier. In fact, one approval also includes a 15,000-sqft discotheque near Commissariat Road. And discos, which were earlier confined to the city centre, are now spreading out to cosmopolitan areas like Koramangala, Indiranagar etc.
The issue surfaced in 2005 when then police commissioner Ajai Kumar Singh ordered a ban on live bands, dance bars and nightlife beyond 11.30 pm. Police claimed that the move was necessary in view of law and order as Bangaloreans protested. In 2009, bar owners moved the Supreme Court to allow their premises to function and also employ women bartenders.
When B G Jyoti Prakash Mirji took over as the city police commissioner in 2011, he also cracked down on illegal bars and pubs. While premises with requisite licences were left undisturbed, police shut all illegal dance bars when they found that restaurants and bars in the central business district had taken shelter under the Supreme Court directive, allowing women bartenders. The series of raids led to the shutting of over 90 illegal dance bars. It hit business since dance bar owners had to pay hefty rents despite the lack of business. But all that is in the past.
Ajay K N, owner of a dance bar on Brigade Road, said: “We had closed down for over 15 months and started functioning two months back after getting the licence. Permits are being issued now following the Supreme Court guidelines under which most pubs operate. Even our customers are happy as nightlife is back and numbers have increased, especially with the New Year around. It’s a happy feeling in the industry.’’
According to Ajay, clearances from fire, traffic police, and the excise departments have to be obtained before the police give a licence. “We have employed women bartenders and can function up to 11.30 pm,’’ he added.

For New Year’s night, the police is likely to relax the 11.30 pm deadline and allow revellers to party at hotels, pubs, and lounges till 1 pm. Of course, drunken driving checks will be in place with police deployed in greater numbers.

As for party lovers, this is long overdue. Fashionista Prasad Bidapa, for one, is happy with the end of the “nanny culture.’’ “For long enough, the police were behaving like a nanny and telling us children to go home, go to bed. I’m happy that nanny has retired, allowing children to have fun. Say cheers again to Bangalore’s discs and parties,
