MIT students form a group to celebrate birthdays with orphans and give them English lessons

DE

A group of six students at the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), who believe in bringing smiles on the faces of poor children, came together last year and set up a small platform, The Help, to reach out to orphans and the destitute. They are now imparting language skills to poor children besides making them happy by celebrating birthdays with them.

The group, originally started by Venkatesh Kumar, Aabis Arsiwala, Vijay, Bishas , Kruti Jain and Suchi (alumni), today has six more members -- Shikha Hallan, Richa Shukla, Priyadarshi Das Gupta, Shirin Bhambhani and Vinayak Prabhu.

Swapnil Puranik, a member the group said, “We are now a group of 12 members. As a first step, we started teaching 15 students of classes nine and 10 English grammar and conversation skills on weekends through an NGO named Sri Krishna Balaniketan in Udupi. We now plan to teach them Mathematics too.”

The group has also launched a programme which they call ‘Cause It’s Your Birthday’ wherein those interested can celebrate their birthday with orphans. The team provides necessary logistics to make the event a memorable one. “We provide everything what the birthday boy or girl ask to make their day memorable. So far we have celebrated five birthdays and several more are lined up. We, however, make sure that these events do not disturb the schedules of NGOs or the children,” Swapnil said.
