Teenager faces charges of stealing

A 13-year-old student who had stolen coconuts to find money to paint the buildings of her school was brought before courts on charges of stealing, the ‘Sri Lanka Mirror’ reported.

The school authorities had asked each student to raise a fund to paint the building and as she was unable to find a sum of Rs 800 (Dh23), she had stolen coconuts.

When she was caught she had eight coconuts worth Rs300 in her possession.

The lawyers, Thushara Gunaratne and Roshan Dehiwala, who appeared for her without any fee told courts that she had gone to find coconuts in a nearby land adjoining the school in Aramangolla area in Horana in the Western province.

Horana Acting Magistrate Manel Gunatilleke released her on personal bail of Rs50,000.

Meanwhile, the ‘Daily News’ reported that President Mahinda Rajapakse ordered an urgent and special inquiry into the incident, quoting Mass Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella at a press briefing.

Minister Rambukwella said that the President spoke emotionally about the incident as it was extensively discussed during the Cabinet meeting., while noting disgusting facts related to it.

He said the President instructed Justice Minister Rauf Hakeem and Education Minister Bandula Gunawardene to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into incident.

President had paid attention to the fact that collecting money in this manner from students was illegal and that Minister Hakeem had pointed out even a circular has henceforth been issued stating the President wanted measures taken to prevent repetition of such situations in future, the minister stressed.

The Cabinet was of the view that this incident should have been directed to the Mediation Board instead of courts.

CDS, you are right. Rs.1 of Sri Lanka is only Rs. 0.42 of India. We will still get Rs. 16 per coconut compared to Rs. 4 or 5 in Mangalore…………

In fact Jossey Sri Lanka exports coconuts to India and because of that price is down to earth here. I don’t know the Rupee exchange rate. Instead of ordering an enquiery President Rajapakse should have sent insturctions to drop the case immediately.

She was caught with 8 coconuts worth Rs.300 - That means cost per coconut in Sri Lanka is approximately Rs.38. Now you Kemmennu guys know what to do with your coconuts..............
