Muscat -  Following the detention in India last month of three Omanis for possessing fake Indian rupees that they had obtained from exchange centres in Oman, the Indian Embassy has clarified the rule on handling of Indian currency by passengers travelling to and from India.

According to Indian rules, foreigners and non-resident Indians are not allowed to carry Indian currency either into or out of India, the embassy clarified.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the embassy said the recent incidents ’have been a matter of concern’ to the governments of India and Oman

Indian regulations state that only Indian residents are allowed to take out Indian currency up to a ceiling of R7,500 per passenger when travelling overseas, and the same amount when returning back to India.

’In all other cases of foreigners, and those of Indian nationals who are not residents of India (non-resident Indians), it is prohibited under Indian law to either take out any amount of currency from India or bring it back into India,’ read the statement. ’Visitors to India are allowed to carry with them any amount of Omani rials or other convertible foreign currencies, which can be exchanged at authorised exchange centres in India, including at international airports and hotels.’

A declaration for foreign currencies that exceed an amount equivalent to US$5,000 in cash or an overall of US$10,000 is mandatory, and has to be conveyed to customs officials at international airports in India at the time of arrival or departure.

Last month, an Omani couple and another Omani man were detained in India for possessing Indian currency that turned out to be fake. The couple was freed after Indian police was convinced that the husband had procured the currency from an exchange centre in Oman without realising it was fake. The other Omani man is still in detention.

During the same period, a suspected Asian national was caught on CCTV last month exchanging fake notes at a currency exchange outlet in Oman.
