Udupi : The general body meeting of the Udupi City Municipal Council here held on Tuesday, 27^th December, 2016.

The meeting stated with stormy note that Opposition councilors of BJP staged protest and marched towards well of the House and argued with President of the House Meenakshi Bannanje and demanding answers on the proposed new Visvesvaraya Market Complex building.

Ramesh Kanchan, councilor said that there was water shortage in some parts of the city and indeed CMC must know the measures taken to mitigate it. The drinking water issue is the main one which can take measures. Narasimha Nayak and other councilors said that the CMC should take steps to deal with water scarcity from now itself instead of waiting till end of summer when it would be too late.

Shashidar Hegde, Assistant Engineer of CMC replied that the CMC already taken steps to store water at Baje and Shirroor dams in the Swarna river and the inflow in the Swarna river was expected to last another 10 days.

He gave statistics that the bund the near Shiroor dam had been built at 1.2 meters as against 0.8 meters which was being built earlier. The steps had been taken to store water in the mini hydel dam near to Baje Dam. This would increase the water shortage capacity in the both reservoirs significantly.

Manjunathaih the Municipal Councillor said that the CMC had urged the district administration and Mines and Geology department to take action to remove silt that had accumulated in the Baje reservoir. So, Pramod Madhwaraj district in charge minister had called a meeting on this issue on 10^th January and that meeting the decision would be taken. The opposition urged the CMC to take all stakeholders into confidence while taking up the project.

The various issues were discussed during the meeting. The issues of illegal banners, delay of road works of Ambagilu Manipal, the problems of road side trees, the establishment of Dr. Ambedkar’s statue, drainage problems, Parkala Market, street dogs problems at Kalmady, chicken centre at Municipal building at Santhekatte and other issues.

Dr. M. R. Pai Opposition leader, Dinakar Shetty Herga, Yashpal Suvarna, Mahesh Thakoor, Narasimha Nayak, Ramesh Kanchan, Janardhan Bandarkar, Shaym Prasad Kudva, Vasanthi Kudva, Amrutha Krishnamurthy, Chandrakanth Naik, Geetha Shet and other councilors were present.

Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje presided the meeting. Sandhya Tilakraj Vice President and Manjunathaiay Municipal Coucillor were present.
