Mumbai: 2 who defiled statue in Kurla caught on cam
MUMBAI: A day after a statue of Mother Mary was found desecrated in Kurla on Sunday, the police claimed to have identified two bike-borne men who were allegedly responsible. Officials from Vinobha Bhave Nagar police station said that they had managed to establish the identities of the two men after going through footage from cameras around Christiangaon.
The desecration of the statue had sparked tension in the locality on Sunday.
Senior inspector Bharat Bhoite said that the bike used by the men is registered with the Thane transport office. "With help from transport officials, we got the biker’s address and our teams have been sent to nab him," said Bhoite.
The police said they are enquiring if the two men intended to spark trouble by creating a rift between communities ahead of elections scheduled for Tuesday.
Earlier News:
An entire Christian village in Kurla hit the streets on Sunday morning after two bikers pelted paver blocks on two statues of Mother Mary. This incident took place at 4 am.
Both the bikers were wearing helmets and so were not identified.
Advocate Sunil Gonsalves, who spoke to DNA about the incident, said that the incident has disturbed the community. "We had approached the police. However, no action was taken initially by the police. It took almost two hours for the police to register an FIR."
Gonsalves also said that top cops had visited the area and assured them that action will be taken.
