Udupi : The former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi’s role in forming Panchayat Raj system great and worth to the citizens of India. Rajiv Gandhi visited every very weak and poor families and later he found that it is necessary to build national consciousness regarding the devolution of power to the people at the grassroots by expanding their political opportunities and participation in Panchayat Raj and urban local bodies, said Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of Fisheries, Sports and Youth Empowerment.

He was speaking after the inaugurating the Gram Swaraj Jagurthi Abhiyan which organized by Rajiv Gandhi Panchayat Raj Sanghaton unit at the Congress Bhavan here on 1^st March, 2017. He said that Rajiv Gandhi was responsible to amendment of Section 73/74 in order to bring the system in India. He had witnessed the problems faced by the people in villages.

There are 6023 gram panchayats in the state which Bangaluru Town, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts leading in the state. If we see, Udupi district is leading in the Panchayat Raj system in the state as per the survey that our district far ahead in the development of education, banking, health, drinking water etc. Indeed, the development of Udupi district has been possible due to the panchayat Raj System which the vision of Mahatma Gandhiji, he said.

Oscar Fernandes Rajya Sabha member and former Union Minister said that the role of congress for the development of country has great. It had brought land development, nationalization of banks, green revolution, amendment of 73/74 of the constitution, economic liberation, RTI, forest act, health right etc. which the vision of Mahatma Gandhi than independence. Women can effectively lead the nation towards development. It is said that there are 33 lakh panchayat members in the country who majority of women. The development of Udupi district, we can see all these achievements. Mahatma Gandhi needs to strengthen the social justice and economic development. The Panchayat Raj system needed to bring weak and poor people into the grama level and so that Grama sabha can promote development in the villages, he said.
