Nexa P1 Powerboat Indian Grand Prix of the Seas: Everything you need to know about the first powerboat race in Mumbai

Mumbai, March 3, 2017: The Nexa P1 Powerboat Indian Grand Prix of the Seas will take place from March 3 to March 5 with six teams participating in the water-based race.Mumbai will have the privilege of hosting its first ever powerboat race. The Nexa P1 Powerboat Indian Grand Prix of the Seas will begin on March 3, 2017, at Marine Drive. A 5.2 km long track has already been designed off the shore in Marine Drive for this much-awaited event to begin. Procam International organises the international powerboat racing event. The Nexa P1 Powerboat Indian Grand Prix of the Seas will take place from March 3 to March 5 with six teams participating in the water-based race. The organisers have also decided to bring in the Koli community into focus with a special Koli Boat race.

The P1 Powerboat race has been promoted with the hashtag, #RoarOnTheShore. The Indian Grand Prix of the Seas faced a lot of difficulty as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Council (BMC) denied it permission to put up structures along the promenade. While the anchored floats or buoys have been allowed by the court and BMC, Procam International wanted access to building a stage at Girgaum Chowpatty for the event. As Mumbai is all set to host its first of the kind powerboat racing, here is everything you need to know about the Grand Prix of the Seas!

1. What is the Indian Grand Prix of the Seas?Course of the P1 Powerboat race

The Procam International-promoted inaugural NEXA P1 Panther Powerboat Indian Grand Prix of the Seas is a racing event which will have twelve boats racing through a water-course track. Nearly 6000 red and yellow coloured buoys (anchored floats/balloons) are being used to form a water-course track for the event. Out of the 40 P1 Panther Powerboats in the world, 12 have been transported to Mumbai for the event. The event will be conducted under the aegis of the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM).

2. What is a P1 Panther Powerboat?

The P1 Panther is a powerboat designed by former Royal Navy of United Kingdom engineers. Reaching the top flat speed of 120 kmph, The length of the boat is 28 ft and height is 5.6 ft. Designed for the world’s best pilots and the ordinary people alike, the P1 Panther comes with different strokes for different folks.

3. What is the Race Format for Nexa P1 Powerboat Indian Grand Prix of the Seas?

The Nexa P1 Powerboat Indian Grand Prix of the Seas will have a well-defined course on water for the NEXA P1 Powerboat. The 12 participating P1 Panthers will complete 15 laps in Race 1 and Race 2, with two mandatory Long Laps in each race, covering about 90 kms on the Saturday of the race weekend; followed by 20 laps in Sunday’s Grand Final comprising approximately 115 kms including the compulsory 3 Long Laps. Boats will be timed on an individual lap basis to determine their starting position for the first race. The teams will feature in time trials on Friday to determine the start position for Race 1 on Saturday. The First race will be held on Saturday, and the qualifiers at this race will enter the second Race on the same day. The grand final will be held on Sunday, March 5, 2017.

4. The Teams contesting

There is a total of twelve boats that will be participating in the event representing six teams. The Six teams with two boats each are HVR Racing, Lloyd Dolphins, Baleno Rs Booster Jets, Ultra Sharks, MoneyOnMobile Marlins and The Mirchi Maverics. There are two Indians participating in this inaugural race, CS Santosh who will be representing Baleno Rs Booster Jets and Gaurav Gill from Ultra Sharks.

5. The Price money

The inaugural Nexa P1 Powerboat Indian Grand Prix of the Seas has an attractive price money of 125,000 USD. The teams will have a practice session on March 3, 2017 from 1.15 pm IST to 1.45 pm and the qualifying session will take place from 2pm to 5 pm. The Race Village, a BCCL initiative, promises an exciting experience, complete with games, celebrity events and elite hospitality.
