Udupi : The state government will deposit the subsidy amount for Dairy producers directly to their account in the bank prior to April end or beginning of May, said Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister for Fisheries, Sports and Youth Empowerment, Karnataka State.

He was speaking after laying foundation stone for the new diary building of Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producer’s Union at Uggelbettu, Uppoor near Brahmavar here on Sunday, 16^th April, 2017.

The state government recently declared the increase of Rs. 5 for the milk producers and providing all necessary needs for the Horticulture. The state government is committed of welfare of milk producers that earlier BJP government was giving a subsidy of Rs. 2 per liter to milk producers and after Congress government came to power that subsidy increased to Rs. 4, and now the state government will increase Rs. 5. The state government understands the problem of Milk producers that severe drought situation prevailed in the state. Already the subsidy amount since October 2016 already deposited in the bank and upto April 2017, the subsidy amount will be deposited in the bank prior to first week of May.

In relate to Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union, he said in case any necessary help needed, the Union directors should delegate to meet Siddaramaiah when he will help to do so. When Rs. 10 crore Parari bridge work completed, then there has been direct contact to Manipal from Uppoor which benefit the Milk Dairy lot. Rs. 10 crore released to start GTTC College at Uppoor and this area will going to overall development.

Pramod Madhwaraj said that many farmers have small cowsheds which will be difficult for them and the cows become old and stop giving milk, there is no place to keep cows. In order to protect cows which not giving milk Cow protectors and Go Shalas should take care of these cows.

The new structure unit of the Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union  established to the 5.9 acres of site at Uppoor which huge structure is taken up at a cost of Rs. 92 crore which will be expected to get ready by December, 2018.

The unit accumulates nearly 1.87 lakh liters of Milk a day with the involvement of more than 326 cooperative milk producers’ union. There is market for 1.20 lakh liters of milk on an average per day in Udupi. There are 35,680 active members who are a fraction of the milk producing associations. The unit was set up in 1974 under the title Canara Milk Union by T.a. Pai, inspired by Amul Founder Dr. Verghese Kurain. Initially 3000 liters of milk was collected every day. In 1985, it was merged into the Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union. By 1986 the amount of milk collected was 4,458 liters.

The processing capacity of the daiary was initially 20,000 litres. In 1997 the capacity was increased to 30,000. In 2004 it was increased to 60,000 liters and in 2011 the capacity increased to 80,000 liters.
