Udupi : Pranab Mukerjee President of Republic of India symbolically laid the foundation stone for the A Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Super Specialty Hospital here at Rajangana on 18^th June, 2017.

Earlier the President was received at the Adi-Udupi helipad by Pramod Madhwaraj, District in-charge Minister, Meenakshi Madhava Bannanje, first lady of Udupi City Municipal Council, Priyanka Mary Francis Deputy Commissioner of Udupi District, Dinakar Babu President of Zilla Panchayat and other dignitaries.

President later visited Sri Krishna Math and made a darshan of Lord Sri Krishna and met Sri Veshwesha Theertha Swamiji of Paryaya Pejawar Math. Other Swimiji’s of Astamath also present. President was honoured by Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji of Paryaya Pejawar Math.

Followed by President then moved towards the Rajangana for the stage programme to lay down foundation stone for Super Specialty Hospital.

K. R. Ramesh Kumar, Health Minister said that it is his destiny to sit along with the President of India. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has taken much needed initiative to start of super specialty hospitals in five districts in Karnataka. The purpose and aim of the government is to provide better health care for the people of the state. Government will provide medicines free of cost for the poor people in these hospitals. We have now lacking the expertise and specialists to open super specialty hospitals in state. The state government will support to those who are willing to take responsibility along with the government to provide better health care.

In his address Pranab Mukerjee President of India said that he is happy to inaugurate multi super specialty hospital in Udupi in memorial of A. Shambhu Shetty and Haji Abdulla for the poor people of locality. It is good initiative of the state government to provide better health care to the citizens. He had the chance visit to Karnataka at 40-45 years to the time when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had contested the Lok Sabha by elelctions in 1978. He also mentioned the close relation with Oscar Fernandes, Manorama Madhwaraj who parents of Pramod Madhwaraj.

He said that in terms of access to medicine and health care, advances in modern medicine and investment in health infrastructure have made many diseases as cholera, small pox, plague, tuberculosis and many more curable and wipe out others which remains a huge gap in our country. This will be very serious question of the nature of health care in India. Against the international standard one doctor per thousand population, we have one doctor for 1,700 people in our country. The situation is more alarming in rural India where the shortage of doctors is to the tune of 83% at the level of the community health centers in India, he said.

We have made significant progress in the quality of health care in the country over past 70 years. Indeed we have emphasizing on the need to increase engagement of the corporate sector in public and private partnership in the field of health care in rural areas.
