Udupi : The street light problems dominated the monthly general meeting of Udupi City Municipal Council here on Tuesday, 31^st October, 2017.

Raising the issue, Yashpal Suvarna BJP councilor, said that since several years the problems of street light never solved. The contractors are not responding the repair of street lights and solution for the street light problems. It will be better to terminate the street light maintenance contractor.

The BJP councilors as well as ruling Congress Councillors’ demanded the solution of street light problems once and for all. The Councillors Prashant Bhat of Congress Councillor, Sumithra Nayak, Vashanthi Shetty, Shyamprasad Kudva of opposition complained regarding the street lights failures and other matters in relate to street lights. They all demanded the solutions of the problems facing by the CMC. Chandrakanth Naik councilor also demanded the earliest solution for the same and need clarification from the Municipal Commissioner Manjunathaih and the concerned official Shashidher Hegde on the matter.

The ruling Congress Councillor Prashanth Amin alleged that both the President and Commissioner of CMC are busy with the various projects inaugurations and cutting the ribbons during the programmes. But both they are not serving for the citizens of the CMC and the ward councilors facing the citizens very badly.  The people of Kola ward celebrated the Deepavali festival with darkness.

He also alleged the Commissioner that in order to get credit from the minister, Manjunathaiah running behind with the minister rather not doing the municipal duties with honest. Since 7-8 months, the meeting of the Malpe Beach Development Committee not called. Without the information of the municipal elected councilors, the Malpe Beach Development fund was given to Padukere Beach development. There is no developmental work undertaken in the Malpe area. He said it is better to keep quite upto 8 months without the developmental work.

Replying to Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje said that in regard to the street light problems, the councilors not attending the meeting. Shashidher Hegde the responsible officer will take care of street light maintenance matters.

Shashider Hegde said that there are 760 Timer Points and it will be difficult to repair the Timer points within one week. 70% of the work already done and only 30% works to be completed very soon. Due to  lighting around 1600 street lights are not working.

Dinaker Shetty Herga, Councillor demanding that earlier there was no system to give street lights maintenance for the contractors and used to done by the municipality itself. But due to certain complaints and other problems, the street light maintenance work has given to contractors.  The contractors are also not doing the better service. It is advisable to say that the street light problems should be solved immediately which would be serious concern by the people.

Yashpal Suvarna said that without the information of the Municipal Councillors’ , the planning of establish of Indira Canteens at in front of Udupi Flower market near to service bus station. He asked the clarification regarding the places of establishing Indira Canteen in Udupi City limit. Manjunathaiha said that 10 cents of land available near Udupi Flower Market and 48 cents of land at near the Old GSLR, Manipal. But decision not yet taken and not confirmed also.

Yashpal Suvarna also pointed out the planned widening the Kansanka Bridge which Rs. 75 lakh spending will be risk that the adjourning road is belongs to National Highway. It may be a problem arises with the National Highway Authority. Replying to Ganesh the official said that it is only the bridge which connecting the NH but not Highway extension.

Most of the councilors are demanding the work of grass cutting at the earliest in respective wards. The grass cutting process has been very slow. Environment Engineer Raghavendra said that there are only six grass cutting machines available presently which not enough and need three more machines to solve the problems.
