Mumbai rains: Army arrives at Nallasopara with supplies, set to join relief operations
New Delhi, Jul 10: Continuous heavy rainfall has brought Mumbai and its adjoining areas to a standstill. Downpour has led to the cancellation and delay of several local trains and slowed down the traffic on many roads. Water-logging was witnessed in several areas of Mumbai suburb.
Suburban services of the Western Railway were stopped. The official said that services between Churchgate and Borivali were, however, normal. Services between Bhayander and Virar are suspended because tracks are submerged in the water. Western Railway on its microblogging site informed that the power supply of Shatabdi Exo has to be switched off as a precautionary measure because the water level has risen above 400mm.
Apart from locals many trains coming from different parts have been cancelled due to rainfall. People are sharing pictures of tracks filled with rain water. Locals are also running slow.
All catering stalls at stations have been asked to keep stock of food items available & close monitoring is being ensured at stations beyond Virar where trns are regulated. Arrangements have been made with the help of NGOs also for providing Snacks, water and Tea for passengers.
Mumbai Heavy Rains : NDRF has rescued 81 salt pan workers stranded at Palghar with the families. At Nalasapora, 450 passengers have been evacuated from Vadodara Express which got stuck due to waterlogging.
Mumbai for the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, Bombay High Court has pulled up the Railways for being unprepared for Mumbai rains. Tracks submerge under water every monsoon, paralysing the local train services in Mumbai, but the Railways has not taken any concrete steps to prevent it, the Bombay High Court said.
Railway tracks at Nallasopara station were submerged after water level rose to 260 mm. NDRF has evacuated 1500 stranded passengers from the Vadodara express at Nallasopara district.
Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde asked schools to remain shut Tuesday in a statement. Train services along the lines of Western Railway have also been affected, as Nalasopara station is flooded which has disrupted services between Vasai-Virar stations. Western Railway trains have been delayed and AC trains services have been suspended Tuesday. BEST buses have also been charting diverted routes since morning.
The Western Railway has said that the assistance from Indian Army/Navy has been requested in terms of disaster management, only to provide transportation of food supplies and other relief material to stranded passengers at various locations between Vasai Road and Virar as these areas are submerged.
