Anant Chaturdashi celebrations were marred by a drowning on Monday (September 24) in Mumbai. In a separate incident coast guards managed to save five people from drowning during Ganapati immersion.

Yadwesh Malekar, 32, died after drowning in Bhandupeshwar Kund. Meanwhile, at Girgaon Chowpatty a major tragedy was averted when a small boat turned turtle after it collided with another boat early on Monday morning.

Five people were rescued from the sea. The injured who were taken to Nair Hospital have been identified as Kajal Meyor (31), Avani (5), Adnan Khan (15), Nilesh Santosh Bhoir (18) and Anita (16).

On Monday morning, people hired boats to go out to the sea and watch the immersion celebration of Ganapatis especially the likes of Lalbaugcha Raja at Girgaon Chowpatty.

In Charkop, Kandivali 17 people were injured after the Ganesh idol they were carrying for immersion fell on them.

Meanwhile in Pune, Ganapati devotees were angry at the police for stopping them from using ’DJ walls’.

Speaking to India Today TV K Venkatesham, Pune police commissioner said action will be taken against 52 Ganesh mandals for violating high court rules on DJ walls and loudspeakers.

Some of the organisers of Ganesh puja told India Today TV that although they had DJ walls installed as in the previous years but they could not use it because police did not allow them.

Some even accused the police of partisanship and said politicians should also be barred from using loud music during rallies.

A member of a Ganesh mandal said that loudspeakers in mosques used during azans should also be pulled down.

Some devotees said that disallowing DJ music could prove disastrous for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra in the next election.
