Udupi : The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party members a walk out from the Zilla Panchayat’s general body meeting here on Friday, November 30, 2018.

Earlier the meeting was adjourned for half an hour due to shortage of quorum of the meeting. As soon as meeting starts one minute silence observed for deceased former ministers Ambarish and Jafar Sharif.

As meeting starts, the members raised the matters relating to toll collection from locals at Sasthan and Hejamady toll gates plaza and asked the clarifications from the Navyuga contracting company officials. The members not satisfied the answers from the Navyaga company officials.

Then BJP dominated Zilla Panchayat members argued that despite passing resolutions, issues like the sand mining, toll collection and others were walked out from the meeting. BJP members Raghavendra and Reshma Uday Shetty charged that the district administration is not keen on involving the members in discussions on district facing severe problems like toll collection and sand problem.

Zilla Panchayat Vice President Sheela K Shetty and Babu Shetty charged that the district administration to prevent members from attending the Rajyotsava award ceremony and Zilla Panchayat meeting in similar day and time with the intention to bar Zilla Panchayat elected representatives to attend meantime. The members then raised slogans against the district administration and against the Deputy Commissioner. The BJP members then staged a walk out paying no attention to the repeated pleas on returning to their seats from the president and standing committee members.

Congress members led by Janardhan Thonse depended the Deputy Commissioner and said she is implementing the programmes being decided by the government.

Earlier the members discussed about enforcing a ban on usage of plastic in the district. Janardhan Thonse alleged that the action was taken only against in retails outlets. It is not sufficient if the government programmes avoid the use of plastics. Janardhan Thonse along with Pratap Murli Shetty said that the usage of plastics should be strictly imposed across the district.
