Udupi : A fully fledged popular weekly market has been constructed in front of Mount Rosary Church and next to Sri Adishakti Brahmalingeshwara temple at Santhekatte, Kallianpur. The work on the market has been completed and is likely to be inaugurated shortlty.

The weekly market on Sunday presently created traffic congestion for the motorists travelling on NH 66 at Santhekatte junction, Kallianpur. During rainy reason, both the buyers and sellers in the market was very difficult and disturbing.

The new market will be benefiting both the sellers as well as the buyers at large. Earlier, the farm produce and other items sold on the roadside itself of the NH 66. The one side service road completely occupied by the sellers of products.

The foundation stone for the new weekly market at Santhekatte was laid by former district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj in 2018. The estimated cost of the new market project was nearing one crore.

The plinth area of the market is 17,500 square feet with designated parking space. There is also an arrangement made for the flow of waste water, toilets, electricity connection, interlock and water connection have been provided to the market. Seating arrangements have been made for 85 people to sell their products. The market connected to NH 66 and Santhekatte, Kallianpur road. There is ample place for the vehicle parking near the NH 66 and other places.

As per the Udupi City Municipality officials, the new construction of the market has completely over. Now, the market will be handed over to revenue section of City Municipality shortly.

Large number of people around Kallianpur is benefiting the new weekly market. The work of the new market construction delayed due to various reasons. Now, sellers as well as buyers of products are happy over the weekly market at Santhekatte, Kallianpur.

The weekly market at Santhekatte has been very famous since several decades prior to existence of National highway from Kundapur to Mangaluru. Even our forefathers used to come to sell products in Santhekatte from very far places like Shirva, Padubidri, Karkala and Kundapur etc when there were no bridges over several small and larger rivers.
