Negative Contribution of Kallianpur for swatch Udupi by  Dr Gerald Pinto, Santhekatte

Kallianpur June 4, 2019: Kallianpur is a hub of educational institutions and lot of NGOs and organizations and conduct swatch Bharat and environmental awareness programmes through the year.  People are educated and economically better off compare to other places.  Kallianpur Panchayat as well as Udupi district has won National awards for cleanliness.  But what is the current situation?  Kallianpur –Santhekatte road drainage, Kallianpur-Pakkibettu High way connecting road, Agasana Kere Lake, Nejar just outside Mount  Rosary church , in front of Mt Rosary Complex,  we can see people throwing plastic and liquor bottles and burning even glass material.  From Kallianpur post office to River Swarna , the road drainage is practically  a dust bin for the citizens.

Main road is the dumping yard:

Starting point of Kallianpur –Pakkibettu- National highway connecting road is the dumping yard. This road separates Udupi Municipality  and Kallianpur panchayat.  One side belongs to Municipality and the other to Penchant. Citizens through all the waste- solid, plastic and liquor bottles on the road and road side.  If it rains then all this will choke the drainage and water will be on the road and it will flood. All this plastic and solid waste will reach the Suvarna river and Agasana Kere lake. This will also invite various diseases.

Miracle in Kallianpur:

There is no rain so we do not find any greenery in Kallianpur except the one side of the road from Ozanam first Cross-to Kallianpur Pakkibettu road. All the plants in this drainage are very green and choking the drainage.  Is it a miracle?  Who is watering these plants?  Is it  the dirty drainage water?  From where this water flows is to be investigated.    Because this dirty water reaches the Agasanakere which is a help line source of water to many wells and hundreds of houses and the water of these wells may loose the quality of   human consumption and there will be water scarcity problem.

Liquor bottles and plastic Waste in the road drainage’s

The Santhekatte-Kallianpur road is the way for thousands of students of several educational institutions as well as people going to the church and temples. But now we see, people dumping plastic waste, beer and whisky bottles in the drainage from Santhekatte to the river belt and this will ultimately reach Swarna River.  Some people burn even glass bottles. Some people drink liquor near the river bank and leave the bottles. Since now there is no rate for bottles no one picks them up.

What is to be done to save Kallianpur and Swarna river?

Many people have no civic sense. They are least sensitive to the environment and to other fellow citizens. Only serious legal action on the offenders is the only solution. The local and district management should think these and other measures. There are so many educational institutions and one of them got Parisara mitra award too. These institutions and NGOs like Rotary and Lions should sensitize people and probable an association like swatch Kallianpur involving all the people may be the solution.
