Udupi : Kota Srinivas Poojary, Minister in state cabinet directed all officials to take immediate attention to ascertain losses and pay compensation due to heavy rains in the district.

The minister was reviewing the loss occurred on various fronts due to heavy rains in the district during the meeting held at DC’s office here on Thursday, August 23.

Assistant Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari said during the meeting that due to heavy rains total loss was estimated Rs 545 crore. Five people lost their lives. More than 675 houses were partially and four houses completely destroyed. Kota Srinivas Poojary said that government has declared a compensation of Rs five lakh to those house is completely destroyed and around Rs one lakh to be given to partial damages of the houses each. Rs 5,000 per month rent will be given to those who lost their houses.

DDPI said that 112 schools are partially damaged, some anganwadi buildings also damaged.

The Horticulture department officials said that they had already assessed the loss and were about to issue the compensation based on the total area of plantation damaged. A total of 18,000 hectres of horticulture crop has been damaged in the district and the growers to be compensated already have been identified. Rs 13,000 per coconut and Rs 3,000 per arecanut tree will be given as compensation, minister said.

The engineers from Public Works Department said that 33 small bridges were damaged. There has been 1851 meters of sea erosion; the loss has estimated Rs 2065.75 lakhs. Mescom officials said that there were 3147 poles and 368 transformers machines and 81.81 km electric wires damaged. The estimated damage will be Rs 1166 lakhs.

Deputy Commissioner G Jagadish, SP Nisha James, MLA Raghupathy Bhat, Additional DC Vidya Kumari, district in charge secretary Maheshwar Rao, ZP President Dinakar Babu, Vice president Sheela K Shetty, all taluks’ tahsildars and other officials were present during the review meeting.
