Udupi: Sea of Devotees throng at Sri Krishna temple for Vittal Pindi Celebrations.
Udupi : The second day of Sri Krishna Janmashtami also called Sri Krishna Leelotsava, popularly known as Vittala Pindi and also called “Mosaru Kudike” held with festive fervor on the final day of celebration in temple city of Udupi. Vittala Pindi is the famous Sri Krishna Leelotsava celebrations held annually during Sri Krishnahtami at Udupi Krishna temple. The highlight of Vittala Pindi is the colorful procession of the Utsava Murti of the Udupi Sri Krishna temple car street.
Vittal is derived from the word ‘Vittala’ which is Lord Krishna childhood name. “Pindi” is derived from the word “Banda” which means that earthen pot containing milk, curds, butter and so on.
The clay idol of Sri Krishna was taken in a huge procession around car street on the beautiful chariot prepared for the purpose and prior to the procession at 3pm, Mahamagalarthi was held to the clay idol in the golden chariot by Swamiji. Meanwhile the idols of Lord Anantheshwara and Lord Chandramouleshwara were placed in the Navaratna Ratha ahead of the golden chariot.
During the huge procession, the main event of the breaking pots which specially erected around the temple, the group of husk people breaking pots filled with coloured water hanging from these erected poles. Udupi famous tiger dance troupes and other folk troupes added colour to the procession. Meanwhile, Swamijis gave away eatables like laddoos, chakkulis, and fresh fruits to the huge crowd as ‘Prasadam’ at the Car Street.
The huge procession was culminated at the entrance of the Sri Krishna Mutt. Then, the clay idol of Lord Krishna was removed from golden chariot and taken in a golden palanquin and immersed the Madhava Sarovara at the end.
