Kallianpur : To instill a critical mind in students of Primary and High school, Milagres English medium organised Rev Fr G L D’ Cruz Memorial Inter-School Debate Competition 2019 as part of the Ruby Jubilee Celebration near here on Aug 26, 2019. About 8 schools  from in and around Udupi participated in the competition. The event began with the prayer song led by students. Prof. Cyril Mathias, retired Professor of Milagres Degree College was the chief guest. The Principal welcomed the gathering.

The event was inaugurated by the chief guest by painting the canvas. Rev Fr Dr Lawrence C D’Souza, Correspondent of Milagres Educational Institutions presided over the programme. In his message Prof. Cyril Mathias enthused the students to have the habit of reading and analysing issues. He stressed saying that debating is an art. One needs to take responsibility for what we do in the pursuit of gaining knowledge in student life by communicating well in English. It will surely turn out to be an added advantage for ones future. Mrs Soumyalatha, Lecturer at MGM College was the guest of honour and Jury member. Mr Jayeesh Kamath, PTA President (High School), Mrs Veera D’ Silva, Headmistress of Primary School were present on the dais. 

In his presidential address Rev Fr Lawrence C D’Souza recalled to mind with gratitude the tireless efforts of Rev Fr G L D’Cruz, Founding Father of Milagres English Medium in whose memory the event was organised. Ms Raksha compered the programme.

Lots were taken and the competitions were held in two categories  – Primary (Std VI &nVII) and High school (VIII – X). Two students from each of the 8 schools gave their best. One student spoke for “FOR” the topic and one student spoke “AGAINST” the topic.

High School: “Competence is more important than Character formation in Education system”

Primary School: “ Television and Modern gadgets are helpful in building the minds of children”

The Valedictory Programme began at 3 pm in the evening with old student Ms Komal as the chief guest. She pointed out the positives and negatives to students regarding debate. She gave away the prizes to the winners.
