Udupi: Sports events can help promote unity and integrity among competitors, creating a feeling of unity, said the Rev. Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi Diocese.

He was speaking on the occasion of the inauguration ceremony of the ’ULYMPICS-1919’, a diocese level sporting event organized by Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM), Udupi Diocese at Milagres College Grounds, Kallianpur near here on Sunday, October 6.

Bishop said that Sports are an integral part of life. Health is more important than editing. Sports should focus on education and sportsmen can only achieve their sport if they work hard. He said defeat is not important in the sport, it is important to participate.

Speaking at the event, former minister Pramod Madhvaraj said that every participant in the sport should participate with a sports spirit. With the emphasis on sports as well as mental and physical health can occur. He said that patience, tolerance and participation in the sport should be successful.

There will be track and field competitions such as 100, 200, 400, 800 meter, relay, long jump, high jump, shot put, discus throw, team volleyball, throw ball, badminton, kabaddi and rope competitions. Competitions were held exclusively for women and men.

International power lifter Jackson D’Souza illuminated the sporting torch.

Dr. Vincent Alva, Principal of Milagres College and Edwin D’Souza, Director of ICYM Central Committee were present on the dais.

Dion D’Souza, President of ICYM Udupi diocese welcomed the gatherings and thanked Ashish Menezes delivered the vote of thanks. Melisha D’Souza compered the inaugural programme.
