Udupi: Traffic congestion and dangers to pedestrians at Santhekatte Junction.

Udupi, October 10, 2019: Traffic problems are nothing new, but these days, Santhekatte, Kallianpura has been witnessing a surge in traffic chaos with an exponential rise in the number of vehicles on roads.

Santhekatte is a place of prominence on national highway 66. Over a period, this place has developed into a Centre of trade, education, high-rise buildings and other activities. All kinds and classes of people visit this place for the weekly market that is famous all over the district, every Sunday.

A full-fledged shandy market has been constructed about 200 meters away from its current location, In front of Mount Rosary Church, at Santhekatte in Udupi. However, its inauguration is still at dark.

Santhekatte is  known for traffic snarls and increasing traffic and congestion is posing threat of the area turning into accident-prone zone. The highway authorities too have exhibited their recklessness by not constructing a proper bus stand, a traffic signal or an underpass here.

Pedestrians and people crossing the road face grave danger because of increased speed of buses, trucks, and other vehicles.

The installation of signal lights had become essential at this junction because of vehicular traffic was heavy. Deploying policemen to control traffic at this junctions would not help much

According to Previous SP in Dec 2018, NHAI urged to install signal lights at Santhekatte junction but still no proper development or follow-up.

The people have waited patiently with the hope that the situation would improve, but with people’s representatives and road contractors not responding to their problems, people are losing patience.

People expect and request the highway authorities, local administration, MLA, MP and all concerned to address the issues of Santhekatte Junction.
