Udupi/Kemmannu, Nov 26: The historic Thonse Padumane Kambalotsava held on Sunday, 24th November, 2019. Thonse Padumene Kambala has a history of over a hundred years. It is said that initially 100 to 200 pairs of buffalos used to take part in the early 19th century. But as time passed, due to various reasons, the number of pairs decreased but still more than 30 pairs of buffalos took part in this years event.
Kambala is traditionally a simple sport which provides much needed entertainment to the rural people. The track used for Kambala is a a paddy field filled with slush and mud.
In olden days, the winning pair of buffalos has been rewarded with coconuts and a bunch of plantains and now a days gold, silver coins or cash is given as prizes.
Kambala and Tulunadu are having cultural relations which is existed since more than 300 years.
Thousands of Kambala fans from and around Kemmannu witnessed the traditional sport.
