Mangaluru : Former minister and senior Janata Dal ( Secular ) leader Amarnath Shetty from Moodubidri passed away at A J Hospital here on Monday, 27th January 27 due to brief illness. He was 80 years old.
He entered politics in 1965 and was president of the Paladka Gram Panchayat of Karkala Taluk. He was the p resident of Moodubidri Town Panchayat. He was the Chairman of the Karkala Taluk Market Society, Co-operative Seva Bank.
He was elected to the Moodubidri Legislative Assembly in 1983, 1987 and 1994 as a three-time legislator and was Minister of Tourism and Mujarai. He lost his seat to Abayachandra Jain of Congress and did not contest the last election.
JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy tweeted: "It is sad to see the death of Amarnath Shetty, a former minister and a simple-minded politician of our party.
It is sad to hear that Amarnath Shetty of Moodabidri in Dakshina Kannada district has left us. I pray that the Lord will grant his soul peace and the strength to end this grief for his family, JDS leader HD Deve Gowda tweeted.
Shetty is survived by his wife and two daughters.
