Kallianpur: Nejar Kings and Hoode Strikers win Milagres Basketball League (MBL)

Kallianpur : As part of Ruby Jubilee Year celebrations of Kindergarten School combined with the intention of paying tribute to basketball legend Kobe Bryant, school cabinet of Milagres English Medium School Kallianpur organized on a grand scale ‘Milagres Basketball League (MBL)’ named JAMMERS 2020 near here in the school basketball court on Feb 27 Thursday @ 11 am.

The ultimate purpose behind the event was to revive the game of basketball after a gap of 5 years. Interested students were trained from December onwards for two months with the initiative of the lively Principal Fr Lancy Fernandes SJ who has raised the standard of Milagres School in three years by giving equal importance to students to pursue academics and sports.

The event commenced at 11 am. It was inaugurated by Dr Royden D’Souza, an old student of the school (SSLC Batch 2009-10) who was the chief guest. Royden was also a basketball player in his school days. He was felicitated for securing 8th Rank in physiotherapy exams under Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences last year. Rev Fr Dr Lawrence C D Souza, Correspondent of Milagres Institutions Kallianpur presided over the event. Mrs Precilla Lewis, Former lecturer and benefactor of the school was the guest of honour.


The event was organized as a tribute to Basketball legend of Los Angelus Lakers (US) Kobe Bryant who died last month in a plane crash. About 46 players were divided into 6 teams namely - UPPOOR PELICANS, KEMMANNU MIAMI HEAT, KALLIANPUR ROCKETS , NEJAR KINGS, AMBAGILU QUEENS, HOODE SHOOTERS.

The event began with prayer song by school cabinet members. Rev Fr Lancy Fernandes SJ welcome the gathering. ASPL of Primary school Miss Janice Furtado briefed the audience on the life of Kobe Bryant in whose honour, the event was to take place.

In his inaugural address, Dr Royden recalled his school days and expressed joy in coming back to school. He appreciated the innovative activities of the school in past two years and congratulated the correspondent and headmaster. He said, "Milagres school has a name for sports at the Taluk, district, state and national level in sports and games. It still continues to foster new talents.” Further he highlighted and thanked the remarkable change that has taken place in the last two years for the benefit of students. He said that it was a blessing to have sports as co-curricluar activity nowadays rather than extra-curricular during the last decade.

Guest of Honour Mrs Precilla Lewis appreciated the activities of the school throughout the year.

In his blessings, Fr Lawrence D’Souza, Correspondent of Milagres Institutions said, " In order to be successful in life, we need to excel in all activities to the extend possible by each student." He appreciated the arrangements made by the Headmaster, staff and school cabinet. Fitness is very important for a sportsperson. A person, who is smart and disciplined in studies, should also excel in the field of sports, " he addd.

Jeffry Dias of Managing Committee & Vice President of Parish Pastoral Parishad, Veera D’Silva, Headmistress,  Jayeesh Kamath and Rekha Shetty of PTA  were present on the dais. Prashanth Lopes compered the programme, Veera D’Silva rendered the vote of thanks.

 

The tournament was held in two sessions. Boys categories matches were held in then morning. Finals were organized from 2.30 pm onwards. In the girls category, Ambagilu  Queens played against Hoode Strikers. In the Boys category Kallianpur Rockets played against Nejar Kings.

At 3.30 pm valedictory programme commenced. Hoode Stirkers won the girls category final and Nejar Kings won the boys category final.

Mr Satish Chandra Chitrapadi, President of Taluk Physical Education Teachers Association  was the chief guest. He distributed the prizes to the winners. Mrs Felciana Lewis, Secretary of Parish Pastoral Parishad, Owen Rodrigues, member of management committee, Michael Mendonsa and Swati Nayak of PTA were present.

 

 

Miss Anusha won the promising player trophy in girls category and Master Sanath won the promising player trophy in boys category.
