Traditional Fishing at Perla Pond of Kemmannu.
Kemmannu, February 28: The First Friday after the Ash Wednesday is the much awaited day for amateur Fishing lovers of Kemmannu and surroundings, as it is the day of traditional Fishing at a pond at Kambla Thotta, Kemmannu. This fishing ritual has continued for time immemorable and an eagerly awaited day for many in the local calendar.
This year, early morning of Friday 6 teams of youth started the fishing by using the traditional fishing technique of using the net connected to 2 poles on each side, locally called as ‘Gorabale’. One needs minimum of 2 persons pulling the net and other guy ready with a bag for the catch.
Catch various to different years and this year there was a bumper crop with each 6 teams, who took part netting a minimum of 25-30 kgs of fish. Several good quality fish like locally called ‘Guru or Kuleji’ and Tiger prawns too were netted this year.
With youngsters showing less interest in these rural adventurous sports, its upto us to judge as to how long these events could continue.

I remember netting a ghur, king fish, felt Like I killed a tiger, even though it was just a foot long. The thrill is nostalgic.
Thomas, you are killing me with such reminders. Thank you.
This is a natural fish pond with access to river through a narrow cannel during rainy season.
Once the fish enter this pond they stay there as there is a fish eat fish world..
