Udupi : The Shab-e-Barat and Good Friday mass gathering and prayers during the lock down period completely banned in the Udupi district, informed by district commissioner G. Jagadeesh.

Speaking to various religious leaders and the media at the District Police Headquarters office at Bannanje here on Tuesday, April 7,  G Jagadeesh informed that Section 144(3) has already been implemented in the backdrop of Coronavirus across the country. Government has instructed the district administration that not to celebrate in mass prayers with gatherings in the forthcoming festivals by the Muslim and Christian communities in the district.

G. Jagadeesh has strictly warned that the mass gathering prayers of Good Friday by the Christians and Shaab-e-Barat by the Muslim communities should be banned in the district due to lockdown in the country.Section 144(3) has already been implemented in the backdrop of Coronavirus across the country. Hence, there is no scope to gathering in prayers of the Muslim communities Shab-e-Barat festival and Good Friday of Christian communities festivals in the district whatsoever. All should pray in their respective homes only during the festival, he said.

Christians have already closed their churches after the lockdown in the district, offering prayers at home. Similarly, Good Friday should be celebrated in their homes only. Muslim communities also cooperated with the district administration and appealed for similar cooperation during Shab-e-Barat. He instructed the police to take stern action against any case if violates the rules of lockdown, he warned.

District Superintendent of Police Vishnuvardhan IAS also warned the both the communities not to gathering in prayers in Mosques and churches during  the forthcoming festivals by the respective communities due to across the country lockdown. Anyone violates the rules; stern action will be taken against the violators, SP said.

Rev Fr. George D’Souza from the Christian community and other communities leaders were placed their views during the meeting.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Kumarachandra KPS welcomed the gathering and proposed the vote of thanks. Muslim leaders and Christian leaders and top policemen were present during the meet.
