Manipal : Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) celebrated ‘Innovation Day’ on October 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the 11th President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

Speaking on the occasion, the guest of honour of the function, Director of Inga Labs Mumbai, Dr George Patani, spoke about the kind of research and innovation industry expects from the academia. He explained the innovation ecosystem of global leaders and gave a few examples of academia and Industrynexus in the developed counties and suggested relevant metrics to measure the outcome of research and innovation. The chief guest of the function Dr. VasanSambandamurthy, CEO of DBT Wellcome Trust India Alliance stressed on the importance of carrying out innovative research at the universities and explained objectives of the Indian Alliance, fellowship and other collaborative funding opportunities available for the biomedical research and outreach activities.

Presiding over the function, Vice Chancellor of MAHE, Lt. General (Dr) M D Venkatesh recollected his interactions with Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and explained how humble, inspirational and passionate he was. He also said that at MAHE we are promoting innovation and entrepreneurship culture and now is the time to take it as a movement as we have all ingredients to do so. He also emphasised on strengthening academia industry interactions.

Dr ArunShangaug, Chief Innovation Officer of MAHE gave an overview of Innovation at MAHE with a few examples of successful innovators. Dr ShrihariUpadhyay, CEO of Manipal Universal Technology Business Incubator (MUTBI explained the entrepreneurship opportunities and achievements of a few entrepreneurs at MUTBI. Dr Manesh Thomas, CEO of Manipal Govt. of Karnataka Bioinbubator spoke about the social and technology innovation at the Bioincubator and highlighted the importance of mentorship and funding.

Dr Raviraja N S, Director of Corporate Relations at MAHE welcomed the guests and moderated the program.
