Women should be financially self-sufficient: Shyamala Kundar

Udupi: Women and children should be educated, self-employed and economically empowered, said Shyamala Kundar, a member of the National Women’s Commission.
She was speaking after presiding over a district-level progress review meeting held at the district panchayat hall, Rajathadri here on Friday, October 23.
To ensure that no children are deprived of education, the government has implemented many schemes for women and child welfare. She said these should be 100 per cent implementation.
She said that women and children who have been abused should be made aware of the authority to complain about their injustice, comfort them and provide them with courage and provide legal aid.
She said that mandatory internal complaints committees should be set up in all government and private institutions to prevent violence against women in workplaces.
She praised the district administration that during the Lockdown period, the measures taken by the district administration to prevent any harm to women and children, migrant women and children in the district.
She said women and school students should be made more aware of cybercrime and booklets should be distributed on how to avoid being victimized by these crimes. Awareness programs and police checks should be conducted to ensure that students do not fall prey to drugs.
She said from December 19 to August in Sakhi on Staff center, there were 28 cases registered, 16 cases were settled, 7 were in court and one has been under consultation in the district.
Under the Family Violence Protection Act 2020-21, 8 cases were registered, 5 cases were negotiated and 3 cases are pending. 25000 in one case and Rs. 5000 in 2 cases were paid as compensation.
Under the ’Mathr Vandana’ scheme, 23865 beneficiaries have spent Rs 10.20 crore so far this year, 4286 beneficiaries have been given Rs 1.54 crore.
Addressing the issues of Asha and Anganwadi activists in the district, she said the issue would be brought to the notice of the central government.
District Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr. Naveen Bhatt, Additional District Collector Sadashiva Prabhu, Deputy Director of Women and Child Development Department Seshappa and officials of various departments were also present.
