13 killed, 7 injured in head-on collision between tempo traveler traveler, tipper near Dharwad

DHARWAD: Thirteen people were killed while seven others suffered injuries after the tempo traveler they were travelling in collided head-on with a tipper near Itigatti cross on Pune-Bengaluru National Highway bypass on Friday morning. The incident was reported at around 7.30am.

The occupants of the tempo traveler (KA 64-1316) were residents of Vidyanagar, MCC (A) and MCC (B) blocks of Davanagere and were on their way to Goa from Davanagere.

SP Krishnakant said that the occupants were the alumni of Saint Paul’s Convent School in Davanagere and had planned a three-day jolly trip to Goa.

The deceased have been identified as Purnima, Praveena, Asha Jagadeesh, Preeti Ravikumar, Manasi, Paranjyoti, Rajeshwari Shivakumar, Shakuntala, Usha, Veda, Nirmala, manjula Nilesh and Rajani Shrinivas. Some bodies are yet to be identified.

The tempo traveler has been completely crushed and the police found it very difficult to remove the dead bodies from the badly mangled vehicle. Cranes were pressed into service to remove the injured persons and the dead bodies. The operation was on till 1.30pm.

The injured were rushed to the district civil hospital in Dharwad and a private hospital in Hubballi. The dead bodies were shifted to KIMS hospital in Hubballi and district civil hospital in Dharwad for post-mortem.

The details of the occupants of the vehicle were not available immediately. It is said that all the occupants of the tempo traveler were from doctors’ families and were on a trip to Goa and had left Davanagere at 5am. They had planned to have breakfast at Dharwad and later proceed to Goa.
