Polio eradication: Udupi records 99.44% , Kallianpur Rotary distributes drops to 34 booths.

Over 90% children receive polio drops in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi districts

Udupi, Feb 1, 2021: While 1.42 lakh (94%) of the 1.51 lakh children received polio drops in Dakshina Kannada, 73,636 (99.44 %) of the 74,049 children aged between 0 and five received the vaccine in Udupi on Sunday.

In Udupi district, a total of 33,414 children (100.29 %) received the drops in Udupi taluk, followed by 27,019 (98.56 %) in Kundapur taluk and 13,203 (99.12 %) in Karkala taluk.

Rotary International polio eradication efforts:

On 29 September 1979, volunteers administered drops of oral polio vaccine to children at a health center in Guadalupe Viejo, Makati, Philippines. The event in metropolitan Manila was arranged and attended by Rotarians and delegates from the Philippine Ministry of Health.

A agreement was signed in 1979 between Rotary International and the Philippine Ministry of Health for a joint multi-year effort to immunize children against polio.

The project’s success led Rotary to make polio eradication a top priority. Rotary launched PolioPlus in 1985 and was a founding member of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. Through decades of commitment and work by Rotary and other partners, more than 2.5 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine.

Kallianpura Rotary and the polio eradication efforts

For the last 25 years Rotary Club Kallianpura is  supplying polio vaccine in Kallianpur, Kemmannu, Badanidiyoor, Thottam, Uppoor areas. Every Year early morning  Rotary members collect and distribute the polio vaccines to 34 booths in these areas in an effort to support the drive to eradicate polio.

Rotary Presidnet Rtn Desmon Vas, Secretary Rtn. Leo william Andrade, Rtn Giridhar Baliga, Rtn. Subbanna Pai, Rtn Vidhyadhar Kini, Rtn Allan, Rtn Braan , Rtn Baptist, Rtn, Clarance, Rtn Shambu and many other members participated in this years event.

Udupi: Polio immunization drive flagged off at Kemmannu Church Hall.

Udupi, Jan 31: National pulse polio immunization programme, to administer polio drops to children below the age of five years, began on the morning of Sunday, January 31 at different locations in Udupi District. At the St. Theresa Church Hall,Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Victor Fernandes flagged off the programme by administering polio drops.

Meanwhile, chief minister B S Yediyurappa also inaugurated the programme in Bengaluru and asked the public to get two drops of polio drops administered to their babies in order to protect them from contracting the disease.

Speaking to reporters, Yediyurappa said, "Media should give widespread coverage to the pulse polio programme and make it a grand success. PM Modi is also involved in the programme. In our state polio drops are being given to 64 lac children."

Rtn. Braan D’souza administered polio drops on 31-01-2021.

The programme was originally slated to be held on January 17. However, it was postponed as the coronavirus vaccine had arrived at that time in the state. In Karnataka, 85,05,060 doses of pulse polio vaccination is available. There are 1,10,179 vaccinators to administer. As many as 6,645 teams of supervisors and 904 mobile teams are also made ready. In Karnataka, the vaccines are being administered in 32,908 booths.

Earlier, health minister Dr Sudhakar told the media, "Chief minister Yediyurappa is going to inaugurate the pulse polio drive at his official residence on Sunday. Even if the parents have got the drops administered to their child, they need to do so once again. There is no side effect in this. There has been no polio infection in the country for the past 10 to 11 years. It has been totally eradicated in India. However, as it is still prevalent in our neighbouring countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan, this vaccination needs to be given to babies compulsorily."
