Udupi : In the name of the development of Malpe beach, the contractors as well as the people are looting the money and violating the law, hence need to cancel the Malpe Development Committee. All the members of Udupi City Municipal Council unanimously passed the resolution to cancel the Malpe Development Committee.

During the monthly general meeting of Udupi City Municipal Council held on Wednesday, August 25, Council President Sumithra R Nayak presided over the meeting while opposition leader Ramesh Kanchan said that even though there would no scope to construct temporarily or permanent structure to run the restaurant or other, the work has been under going on at Malpe Beach which would be violating the law. Here, in the name of development, Malpe Development Committee violated the law and looted the money, Ramesh Kanchan alleged.

To support the question of Ramesh Kanchan, Yogish Salian ruling member also said that in the tender condition, if any loss of life in Malpe beach or drowning cases, the contractors are responsible. But, in five years, 16 tourists lost their lives in Malpe Beach. Recently one student drowned in Malpe Beach. Who is responsible for the loss of life? Yogish Salian asks. He said that neither the district collector, who has been the president of Malpe Development Committee or others had done any action for the loss of human lives.

In response to the matter, Municipal Commissioner Dr Uday Shetty who is also a member of the development committee said that the temporary permission has been given to construct the building. If, any violation of law, the municipality will take action on them, he said.

  The majority of the council members argued that Malpe beach area is under Udupi City Municipality and needs to give administration of beach development to Municipality. There should be a need to cancel the Malpe Development committee under the Deputy Collector of the district. Sumithra Nayak said that the resolution passed in the council will be informed to the district collector.

The opposition member Celine Karkada complained to the president that recently installed LED lights at various streets including Simbra were stolen. To support Celine Karkada, ruling members also told her that their street lights were also stolen. Local MLA Raghupathy Bhat informed the officials that a complaint to police should be made in regard to the missing of street LED lights.

Sunder J Kalmady said that from Karavali By-pass to Malpe on National Highway 169(a), due to the large number of path holes on the road, it is very difficult to trespass on the road and several accidents have taken place. In reply to Raghupathy Bhat said that as soon as the rainy season ends, all path holes on the road will be closed at the earliest.

Vijay Kodavoor member said that what action taken by the municipality on street vendors of fruits and other fast food vendors from the point of view of health is concerned, which is very harmful for humans if these vendors use chemicals on the fresh fruits and so on. Vijay Kodavoor demanded a meeting on this matter as soon as possible.

Vijay Kodavoor member said that due to shortage of municipality labour workers, plenty of problems are taking place in the municipality and need to make the solution to reduce the absentees in the municipal duties. The official said that there are 67 municipal labourers that the majority of them used to be absent from duties. But due to pressure not to put holidays, around 20 to 30 workers are going to take leave from their duties presently. We put pressure on the laborers not to take leave from their duties, the official said.
