Archdiocese of Bangalore mourns the death of Oscar Fernandes.
With a deep sense of pain and anguish, the Archdiocese of Bangalore mourns the death of former Union Minister and sitting Rajya Sabha MP, Shri. Oscar Fernandes, who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mangaluru after he suffered a fall while exercising.
Shri Oscar Fernandes was a veteran politician who represented Udupi Lok Sabha constituency for five times. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1998 and ever since he has been a Member of the Upper House for four consecutive terms. Shri Oscar Fernandes also held important portfolios as a Union Minister in the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, Ministry of Youth Affairs, and Sports, Ministry of Labour and Employment, and Ministry of Transport, Road and Highways.
Besides politics, Shri Oscar Fernandes was endowed with many talents. He was a versatile musician who could play many musical instruments. He was also a renowned artist of Yakshagana, a traditional dance form in Coastal Karnataka and ‘Kuchipudi’ dance. A former employee of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) resigned his job to enter politics with the aim to serving people. He was simple, compassionate and always approachable. As a staunch believer in the teachings of Christ, he was above the politics of caste, colour and creed, dedicated his life for the uplift of the poor and the down trodden.
As a Member of the Parliament and Union Minister, he was instrumental in introducing various developmental projects to the State, especially for Coastal Karnataka that he represented. His developmental works are witness to his dedication and service.
In the death of Shri Oscar Fernandes, the country has lost a perfect ‘gentleman’ politician who throughout his public life was honest and without an iota of corruption, which is indeed a source of inspiration and motivation to all in Political field.
On behalf of the entire Christian Community of the Bangalore Archdiocese, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family of Shri Oscar Fernandes. We pray that the merciful God grant them the courage and strength to bear the loss of their beloved one and that they may find consolation in Him.
May the soul of the faithful departed Rest in Peace.
