Udupi : Tributes meet for veteran congress leader Oscar Ferandes who passed away on Mangaluru on Monday, held at Congress Bhavan here on Saturday, September 18.

In his condolence tribute to Oscar Fernandes, former minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said that Oscaranna’s vision for an inclusive India had a huge influence on the politics of our time. His honesty makes everyone would say that Oscaranna. His contribution to the Udupi district has numerous. However, people might say that what had done for Udupi by Oscar Fernandes. He never wanted publicity whichever he done for the people at large. He had no enemies in his life and he became “Ajathasathru”.

If we can see what had done to bring Sugar Factory and his relation with the farmers which never forgotten by the people of Udupi. He brought Doordarshan Center  in Brahmavar. His contribution to develop Varahi project would be appreciated. He was the person who developed National Highway 17 now National Highway 66 in undivided DK district. Not only that he brought MRPL in Mangaluru and also he is responsible to development of International Mangaluru Airport. He also had responsible to introduce Malpe to Thirthahalli National Highway 169A. He also responsible to develop Shiradi Ghat road and also NH between Bangaluru and Mysuru as well, Sorake said.

Vinay Kumar Sorake said that Oscar Fernandes with his hard work, pleasant nature and popularity he became one the tallest leaders of Congress Party who helped in making many important decisions. He was one of closed congress leader among Gandhi family includes Rajeev Gandhi. He was a gifted leader and an efficient leader who served as a minister in Union Government, president in state congress twice, general secretary of Congress party at the center and many more. His services to the Udupi and the country will be always be remembered by the people, Sorake said.

Sorake said that Oscar Fernandes always memorable to Udupi. He had close touch with all swamijis of Astha muths including late Pejawar Swamiji. He was a simple, dignified, and humble person in his political career which led him a dignified politician. We should pay homage to Oscar Fernandes in all gram panchayats level also, he said.

Former minister Pramod Madhwaraj also spoke on Oscar Fernandes and his relation with him since his childhood which Oscar used to visit his mother at Malpe.

Earlier, Ashok Kumar Kodavoor President of Udupi district Congress Committee spoke on Oscar Fernandes and his personal role to growth of political career.

Fr. William Martis, Vinay Kumar sorake, Pramod Madhwaraj, Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, Veronica Cornelio and others lighted the lamp in front of Oscar’s portrait.

Large number of Congressmen and others gathered at Congress Bhavan to pay their tribute to Oscar Fernandes.
