Former Kerala Lalithakala Akademi chairman and artist-writer Sathyapal T A said tribal art reflects their ecological and communitarian worldview. Gonds, Rajuars, and Bhils are prime examples of such a web of life and the view of life.
Making a presentation on native arts of India’ Mr. Sathyapal, who has widely traveled and written about tribal arts, said Adivasi life is a web of life that includes not just humans but also plants and animals. They share an affectionate relationship with nature which is also reflected in their various art forms.
Talking specifically about Gond, Rajuar, and Bhil art forms,’ he showed a series of slides that demonstrated their ecological worldview and their intimate connection with nature. Mr. Sathyapal also explained Adivasi stories, beliefs, music, and dance, indicating communitarian values. Lack of understanding and insensibility, among others, are harming Adivasi’s life and art. "It is necessary to break the barriers between tribal artists and contemporary artists," he said.
Moderating the discussion, Prof Varadesh Hiregange said it is our attempt to sensitize ourselves to the nature, variety, and worldview of the Adivasis. Artists Purushotham Adve and Sindhu Divakar were present.
