Manipal : Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) observed World Disabled Day with a special event at Melaka Manipal Medical College, underlining the importance of creating an inclusive and accessible world. This significant gathering was a collaboration between the Innovation Cell of Prasanna School of Public Health and the Department of Health Policy, drawing attention to the collective efforts needed to support individuals with disabilities.

The day was enriched by the presence of the Chief Guest, Smt. Rathna Suvarna, the District Disabled Welfare Officer of Udupi, whose words painted a picture of empowerment and progress. She shared the advancements and initiatives led by the governments of Karnataka and India aimed at enhancing the lives of people with disabilities. Highlighting the Persons with Disability Act of 2016, Smt. Suvarna’s address was not just informative but also a source of inspiration. She illustrated how these efforts are changing lives, urging the student community to actively contribute towards this cause. Her commendation of the student and faculty efforts in the Masters in Social Work Programme at Prasanna School of Public Health was a testament to the impactful work being done in collaboration with governmental initiatives.

Dr Asha Kamath, the Incharge Director of PSPH, emphasized the significance of the day’s observance, aligning with the compassionate vision of Shri D.A. Prasanna, the chief patron of PSPH. She remarked, "Today’s observance is a testament to our collective commitment to fostering an inclusive society. It aligns perfectly with the vision of our chief patron, Shri D.A. Prasanna, and underscores our dedication to creating a world where accessibility and equity are not just ideals, but realities for all."

The event also saw active participation from coordinators and faculty members who were instrumental in organizing the day. Dr Varalakshmi Chandrasekharan, Associate Professor in the MPH Programme, introduced the significance of the observance, while Dr Rahul Sheshan Clare spearheaded the organization of the day’s competitions, focusing on innovations for a more accessible and equitable world. The coordinators, including Dr Arathi Rao for the MPH programme, Dr Rajesh Kamath for the MHA programme, and Dr Teddy Andrews for the MSW programme, along with the faculty of the Department of Health Policy, played important roles in the success of the event. Dr Vani Lakshmi R proposed the vote of thanks. Their efforts highlighted the intersection of public health, social welfare, and innovation in addressing the challenges faced by people with disabilities.

Special acknowledgments were extended to the leadership of MAHE for their unwavering support, including Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor, Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. (Dr.) M D Venkatesh, Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Sharath Rao, and Registrar Dr Giridhar Kini. Their support underscores the institution’s commitment to fostering an environment of inclusivity and accessibility.
