Udupi, May 02 : As the current summer background, temperature is increasing day by day due to heat wave and heat wave stroke (heat stroke) is likely to adversely affect the health of the workers, the district administration and the district disaster management authority have issued precautionary measures to the building and other construction workers, street vendors who are working outside with a view to maintaining the health and safety of motorists and all other categories of workers, all building and other builders and others in the district. And given the following advice and instructions to the owners and workers of other industries and requested them to cooperate with the district administration in order to maintain their safety in the coming days.

Employers should make arrangements for cold drinking water and electrolyte supplements for workers at the workplace. Workers and everyone else should drink plenty of water every 20 minutes or more to avoid becoming de-hydrated and take care to rest and work in working alcohol. Strenuous and outdoor activities should be performed when the temperature is lower, i.e. morning or evening.

Employers should be careful not to expose workers to direct sunlight from 11 am to 4 pm. If possible, large building and other construction workers may work on night shifts.

  Employers should provide shaded areas to facilitate workers to work during periods of high sun temperatures or re-schedule the working hours for employees and workers in consultation with the workers.

Employers should construct temporary sheds with ventilation, lighting and potable water system for resting near the workplace. Following the health advisory issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for workers, coordination should be made with health departments to ensure regular health check-up of workers.

Workers should preferably wear cotton and white color full sleeved shirt/clothes, cap and cooling glasses while working. Employers should take appropriate measures to reduce room temperature in relation to workers working indoors.

While moving the person with symptoms of heat stroke to a cooler area, the person suffering from heat stroke should be kept minimally clothed, the person should be sponged with cold water or ice packs should be used. If there is no improvement in the person suffering from heat wave stroke, take steps to immediately move him to the hospital and give him appropriate treatment, Dr.K Vidayakumari  who is also the chairman of the district disaster management authority, said in the announcement.
