Udupi, May 04 : National highway development works should be carried out by creating an alternative route system so that the smooth movement of the public is not disturbed, District Collector Dr K Vidyakumari instructed.

She was speaking at a meeting to review the progress of works related to National Highway 66 and 169A held at the Collectorate Hall of Manipal Rajatadri in the city today, May 4, followed by a personal visit to the work sites at Santhekatte, Kallianpur.

Complaints are being heard that due to the development work of Santhekatte underpass road of National Highway 66, the local public and the smooth movement of vehicles are being obstructed and there are also cases of vehicular accidents. She told the developers that the problems caused to the common people should be solved immediately by making all necessary replacement systems to eliminate them.

Due to the work of the underpass, it has become necessary for the students going for daily business and schools to walk several kilometers even to cross the road. She instructed that a temporary flyover should be constructed for pedestrians to cross the road.

She also instructed the police officers to file criminal cases against the concerned contractors in case of road accidents due to the negligence of the contractors or the developers at the places where the National Highway development work is being carried out in the district.

Which way should the vehicles move? What should be their speed, warning signs about the work in progress and other warning signs should be installed in a prominent manner, she said, there are chances of monsoon rain starting from next month, in this case, the background of the works and the traffic will be affected. She said that necessary works should be carried out soon so that this does not happen.

She instructed the officials that the assembly work of the iron girdles which have come to the flyover of Indrali Railway Bridge should be started and completed immediately.

  She instructed that the land acquisition process required for the highway work from Coastal Junction to Malpe should be coordinated by the Sub Divisional Officers and the Highways Officers and completed soon and the road work should be started promptly.

She told the officials that should coordinate with the lawyers to settle the High Court case related to the land acquisition process for the National Highway works near Parkala at the earliest.

District Superintendent of Police Dr. Arun K said that there is a possibility of loss of life due to negligence while carrying out the works. It is the primary duty of the contractor to ensure that this does not happen. He told the police officials that in case of accidents due to negligence, a case should be registered against the engineers concerned. He said that if the police officers also neglect to file a case like this, disciplinary action will be taken against them.

Assistant Commissioner Rashmi, Udupi Tehsildar Gururaj, National Highway Authority Project Director Abdullah Mohammad Azmi and others were present on this occasion.
