Udupi/Kemmannu, June 30, 2014: Rain or Shine, when one is dependent on agriculture for livelihood, you are left with no choice but to begin with your annual agricultural activities. Lack of rainfall is threatening to turn the situation grave for farmers this year. One of the few farmers who cultivate paddy in Kemmannu area, John Danti of Badanidiyoor has started sowing, hoping that rain will resurface and save his crop.
The meteorological department has predicted only 93% of rainfall this year due to the El Nino factor. However in the month of June there is shortage of 42% of rainfall this year. The department is hopeful the situation will improve in the month of July and the shortfall will be covered.
Farmers like Santhan Lewis are worried a lot as the fields where he sow have dried up and lost all hope of recovering the crop. Many farmers have decided not to do any agricultural activities this year. Many farmers are fearful that India is staring at a draught.
High cost and non availability of labor, low price for agricultural products, lack of interest in youngsters towards agriculture, converting agricultural lands for residence or commercial purpose is having its toll and the day is not far when all agriculture related activities will come to a standstill in the coastal belt.
