Malpe/Udupi, Jul 30, 2014: The Country boat fishing is comparatively tougher as the fishermen go into the sea during the monsoon. This traditional fishing from the Malpe fisheries harbour every years starts from Mid June till Mid August . The country boats will dominate the sea during this season as bigger boats such as "Deep sea Trawlers" and Purse Seine" boats do not go out for fishing due to the ban. There are about 60 country boats in Malpe and nearly 2,600 fishermen divided into 41 groups are employed in country boat fishing.
The bigger boats do not venture into the sea during these two months, to allow the natural process of fish production and also because the sea is rough. The country boat fishermen catch prawns, mackerels, sardines, and silver belly. The country boats do not go beyond eight nautical miles in the sea that is Panambur in the south and Gangolli in the north.
Before the country boat fishermen start their season they offer Prayers and Pooja to the sea for the safety return of the fishermen and also for good fish catch, through which they can sustain their living. “Since the supply of fish is less during this period, the profitability is more for country boat fishermen.
We have these pictures from our team member who visited Malpe harbour this morning where a huge catch of the sword fish and prawns by Gopal Karkal Boat Team were captured. The Sword fish was weighing 80 KG and the present market price is Rs. 112/= per kg. Some of the country boats brought about 1 to 2 tons of Medium sized prawns and the present selling prices of these prawns is Rs. 350/= per kg.
A boat full of shrimps will fetch around Rs. 5 Lakhs per day depending on the catch and the predictions are good season of fishing this year.
