Print Udupi: Torrential Rains Submerge Low Lying Areas With Floods
Udupi, Aug 1, 2014: The heavy rain throughout last two days, has caused floods in the low lying areas in the district and people have panicked. Few villages have been inundated and few families have been shifted to higher places and many others are in distress.
With Swarna and Seetha rivers in spate, low lying areas like Uppoor, Matpady, Chanthar in Brahmavar, Kallianpur Bridge area too have been flooded.. A women who stranded near Kallianpur bridge near Uppor has been rescued by a canoe and shifted.
In kemmannu the rainfall also affected the low lying areas of Mudalakatta, Nadukudru, Padukudru, Thimmankudru, Honnappakudru and they are all flooded. Agricultural land is submerged. People are panicked as their cattle and chicken sheltered in homes.
Karkal Taluk and Agumbe witnessed heavy rain and the rivers are full to the brim. Rivers in Shirva are overflowing thereby submerging paddy fields. In Kundapur Varahi, Sowparnika rivers are also full.
Meanwhile, sea erosion has intensified at many places in Udupi district.
If the sea erosion continues, then some fisheries roads are likely to be damaged or washed away in the erosion.
The boulders dumped to check sea erosion in some places have already been washed away.

| Nice pics, may be thrilling for the young, but difficult situation for the people and animals inhabiting the area, think the flooding is worsening every year due to rise in sea water level!! BTW, can see an under construction house in one of the pics, how come they did not consider the yearly flooding before choosing to build the house in that site? Agree[2]

| I still remember the floods in Kallianpur, Kemmannu....People used to starve for weeks... as some poor people were not keeping any stock of food.... Now the time has changed...Mudalakatta, Nadukudru, Padukudru, Thimmankudru, Honnappakudru,moodukudru,Uppoor there was no contact with the people as there were no mobiles or bridges. Agree[6]
