Mumbai: Dr. Kalam inaugurates the Silver jubilee celebrations of Guru Nanak College
Mumbai, Aug 8, 2014: Bharat Ratna Dr A P J Abdul Kalam inaugurated the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the Guru Nanak College of Arts, Science & Commerce, New GTB Nagar, Sion Koliwada, in the College Auditorium this morning 8th of August, 2014. After a grand welcoming ceremony former president of India Dr. Abdul Kalam inaugurated the ceremony by lighting the lamp.
Padma Bhushan Prof M M Sharma, former Director of Institute of Chemical Technology and Dr Rajan Velukar, Vice Chancellor of University of Mumbai were the guest of honour.
After setting up 38 schools in Mumbai since 1947, Guru Nanak Vidyak Society established Guru Nanak College of Arts, Science & Commerce in 1989 to offer equal opportunity to higher and quality education, especially to the students from the weaker sections of the society by providing highly qualified faculty and excellent amenities.
Sardar Manjit Singh Bhatti, President, Managing Committee of Guru Nanak Vidyak Society, said “It gives us immense satisfaction that our college, which is located right amidst the slum area, has been fulfilling its commitment to our principle of ‘Service to Society’ by reaching out to a diverse group of students coming from various backgrounds especially those from socially and economically vulnerable sections of society. What’s equally significant is that some of our students have been the university toppers in academics and medalist at state and national level in activities like culture, sports and NSS.”
Dr Vijay Dabholkar, Principal of Guru Nanak College, said, “Currently, over 2,500 students study at the College, which offers a multitude of UG programmes in Science, Arts, Commerce Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting & Finance, Banking & Insurance), Bachelor of Mass Media, Bachelor of Management Studies, TY BSc (Information Technology) and a PG programme in Commerce and a PhD in Hindi. The college is also planning to extend existing programmes to PG or PhD levels. Our emphasis is on developing special skill and offering of Certificate Courses focused on all-round development of students for enhancing their capabilities and employability.”
Guru Nanak College is housed in an imposing six-floor building with the state of the art facilities to provide ‘Quality Education to All’.
