Udupi: Catholic Sabha Distributes Scholarship to academic toppers

Udupi, Sep: The John D’silva Foundation Mumbai and the Catholic Sabha Udupi Pradesh jointly organized a scholarship distribution event at the Don Bosco Hall of Shirva Parish on the 7th Sep, 2014.

The Programme began with the prayer by Rev. Fr. Ferdinands Gonsalves, Spiritural Director, Catholic Sabha, Diocese of Udupi and an Welcomed dance. Melwyne Aranha, President, Catholic Sabha Shirva unit welcomed the gathering.

Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi inaugurated the event by lighting the lamp. Academic excellence achievers in SSLC and PUC from each parish of the district were honored with cash prize and a certificate. Six teachers who were honored by the district on Teachers Day were felicitated by the Bishop along with MLA J. R. Lobo and MLC Ivan D’souza.

In replay to the felicitation, Mangalore south MLA J R Lobo said that The Christian community is known its excellence in education but our youths do not take up higher studies and rather prefer to settle down in the gulf nations, youth should come forward and join the military and government services which is also the part and parcel of the social service, he said and concluded with the need to start an academy to train students in Civil Services.

MLC Ivan D’Souza spoke during the event and stressed that the parents should support their children to take up civil service examinations and promised to support Manasa during his tenure as MLC.

John D’silva, Chairman of John D’silva Foundation, Mumbai in his message said that today children are require to be highly qualified. Education is one of the most precious wealth which the parents can give to their children and emphasized the need for Christian children to rise for higher positions in the society.

Bishop Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo in his message echoed the sentiments expressed by all the speakers about the lack of representation by christens in the government and military services and hoped that by 2020 at least 25 youths from Udupi Diocese will join the IAS cadre and promised that the diocese will support and encourage interested students. During the event Bishop unveiled the box containing articles prepared by students of Manasa and appealed to patronize Manasa.
