Mother’s Day: Time to Remind Mothers of their Own Health and Well-Being
• Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon celebrates Mother’s Day with a special session with Gynaecologists and Master-Chef winner Vijaylaxmi
• Women often ignore their own health concerns as they devote their lives to caring for their children and family
Gurgaon, May 9, 2015: From urinary tract infections, to pelvic function disorders to such serious concerns as cervical cancer -- women face multiple health worries during and beyond their reproductive periods. However, often they ignore their own health issues, do not pay attention to indicators or warning symptoms as they are too busy looking after their families.
To draw the attention of mothers and women to their own health issues and the need to stay alert, doctors at Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon today held a special talk session with Gynecologists to mark Mother’s Day.
The session with Gynecologists was followed by a cookery show where Master Chef India 2 winner Vijaylaxmi enchanted the audience comprising mothers with a demonstration of a her special Mother’s Day recipes.
At multiple points in their lives, women face different kinds of health issues ranging from hormonal imbalance, disturbed menstrual cycles, polycystic ovary syndrome or other reproductive health issues to more serious health woes such as cervical or ovarian cancer. The key to warding off dangers and threats is to stay alert and keep up the defences.
In the period after pregnancy, women experience several characteristic health issues such as urinary incontinence, issues with the bowel movement and painful sex. Sometimes there can emerge serious disorders such as pelvic function disorders or pelvic organ prolapse. These issues should never be taken lightly and should be immediately reported to the doctor.
“Among the most common forms of cancer specific to women are cervical and breast cancers which together claim a large number of lives. A little amount of alertness and awareness about these issues can save a number of lives by detecting the developments on time. This is particularly relevant in the case of cervical cancer which is the only form of cancer that can be prevented with vaccination. However, we find that awareness is very abysmal among Indian women about health issues that are so crucial to them,” said Dr Nupur Gupta, Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon.
The doctors spoke at length about the need for women to keep attentive about any changes taking place in their bodies – both physical as well as functional.
“One of the most important aspects of maintaining health is to meet your doctor regularly and make preventive screenings a part of your life. However, this concept is yet to catch up in India where people, particularly women ignore their health and consider preventive checks a waste of time and money. Breast cancer and cervical cancers can be detected through simple and cost effective tests like an ultrasound/mammography and a PAP Smear. However, most women don’t even know the importance of the same,” added Dr Aruna Kalra, Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon.
“Sometimes, so busy women are in looking after their families and juggling between work and other responsibilities that they keep postponing visits to health centres. Mother’s Day is a good occasion to remind women that they are individuals too and their health is extremely important,” said Dr Pooja Mehta, Consultant Gynaecologist, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon.
The session with the doctors was followed by an interactive discourse in which the members of the audience joined in to share their experiences, difficulties and suggestions regarding motherhood.
