Health Dept., CMC take steps to prevent malaria in Udupi
The Department of Health and Family Welfare and the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) have been making efforts to check the spread of malaria here.
According to the figures made available by the department, there have been 214 cases of malaria in the city since January 1. This included 36 cases in January, 34 in February, 20 in March, 48 in April, 56 in May and 20 till June 16.
Publicity campaign
As the number of cases increased during the monsoon, the Health Department and CMC have taken up a publicity campaign through public announcements by autorickshaws.
K. Premananda, District Vector Borne Disease Control Officer, told The Hindu that 26 link workers were visiting vulnerable areas such as building construction sites and labour colonies and giving information on precautionary steps.
They were doing a fever survey and helping in early detection of malaria, he said.
Malaria inspection identity cards were being provided to construction workers and site supervisors. The cards contained details of the survey and the treatment.
“More instances of malaria are found among construction site workers coming from north Indian States than those from districts of north Karnataka. This is because those workers are mobile,” Dr. Premananda said.
Do’s and don’ts
People have been urged to keep their surrounding clean. Petty shops should dispose open tender coconut shells, while others should dispose coconut shells, broken vessels, tyres and tubes in a proper manner.
People should use mosquito nets or mosquito destroyer machines. Garbage should not be thrown on vacant sites. People having flower pots in flats should fill it with sand till the brim so that water was not stagnating in it.
Stagnation
“Water should not be allowed to stagnate as it helps breed mosquitoes. If anyone gets fever, he/she should seek treatment immediately,” Dr. Premananda said.
