Better Policing Interactive campaign held at Children Welfare Centre High School & Jr. College, Versova
 
Mumbai Oct 29, 2015: Better Policing Interactive campaign held at Children Welfare Centre High School & Jr. College, Versova  with the theme better Policing Campaign.
Around 150 members took part in the event which included  Mohd. Afzal, Stanley Dsouza, Surindra Khubchandani, Ashvin Barshinge.
 
Principal Sir Ajay Kaul, Children Welfare Centre High School & Jr. College and Founder – Clara’s College of Commerce and a State Awardee was thanked during the event for graciously allowing us the use of the beautiful hall, refreshments and  all other arrangements with his team members. Sir Ajay has agreed to support us in all our future programmes in his campus including his Law College at Malad.
 
Mohd. Afzal,  our team member and responsible for this meeting welcomed the gathering.
 
A Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative [CHRI] video presentation giving the highlights of the Police Reforms story in Maharashtra followed by clarifications to the queries raised from the floor of the house.
 
Citizens / activists were asked  to share their experiences with the Police. Quite many hands went up. Two of them shared their unpleasant experiences with the Police. They were frustrated as there was no outcome. We told them to send us those details so that we can guide them the way forward. It would be very useful for us to collect such data which could be addressed to Senior Police Officials for redressed.
 
One of the participants had a positive experience.  But one of them was very cynical saying nothing good will come out of this and the police will continue to behave the way they are behaving. 
 
The key issues which were  obvious is that many of them do not know their rights vis-à-vis police and also the basic understanding of simple laws like a Cognizable and Non- Cognizable Offences [NC’s] etc.
 
Some of the points covered during the session were The CHRI booklet , “101 things you wanted to know about the Police But where afraid to Ask “was well received. In fact copies in Marathi, Hindi and Urdu were taken. Session was conducted in Hindi and English.
 
In fact one of the participants Mr. R.S. Shah while appreciating what we are doing has sent us a detailed email how we should continue with such public awareness and organise groups in various localities to work on the Better Policing Campaign.
 
But the overall mood of the participants who thanked us was that we must organize ourselves and work towards ensuring that we have Better Policing and work towards it.
