Dharmasthala, March 2016: Hundreds of devotees have visited Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada to take part in the special prayers held on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri.
People from different parts of the State, including Bengaluru, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru and Hassan, came on a padayatra to the pilgrimage centre. They walk in the morning and evening hours and take rest when it is too hot to reach Dharmasthala.
Lakke Gowda, a resident of Chikkenahalli in Channarayapatna, left his village with his wife Savithramma on Monday night. By 9 am on Tuesday, he was in Hassan. “We slept at a relative’s house on the way for a couple of hours and resumed our journey early in the morning. We reached Dharmasthala in two days,” he said. For last five years, he has been visiting Dharmasthala ahead of Shivarathri. This time his wife also accompanied him.
The devotees go on a padayatra to fulfil vows made in the name of Manjunatha Swamy of Dharmasthala. They bunch together and make arrangements for shelter by getting in touch with friends and relatives in towns and cities on the way to Dharmasthala.
Interestingly, many youth organisations and philanthropists come forward to help the devotees by offering cool drinks and food on the route. In Hassan alone, a couple of groups had set up pandals on Ring Road so that devotees can take rest and get refreshed before continuing their journey. At Gundegowda Koplu Circle, a group of youth who are into plywood works had made arrangements to provide butter milk and juice for the devotees. Similarly, another group was providing them with lunch.
Every year a few devotees meet with accidents and die on the way. On Monday evening, Manohar (25), from of Doddenekkundi village in Bengaluru Urban district died after he was hit by a truck on NH – 75 near Heggadihalli Gate in Hirisave Hobli in Channarayapatna taluk. He was member of a group that was on padayatra from Doddanekkundi to Dharmasthala. His fellow travellers informed Hirisave police. A case has been registered.
