Udupi : To observe and create more awareness on the occasion of Global Antibiotic Awareness Week, Cycle Rally is being organized on Sunday, 20^th November, 2016 at 8.30 am from Kasturba Hospital, Manipal to Udupi and back to Manipal.

Speaking to media persons at Udupi Press Club on Saturday, 17^th November, Dr. Chiranjay and Dr Vandana said that the program is to create awareness on misuse of Antibiotics by the people and create more awareness on the medical fraternity about its judicious use. This is jointly organized by Kasturba Hospital and Dr. T. M. A. Pai Hospital Udupi in association with members of Indian Medical Associations Udupi Karavali and Udupi Cycling Club Udupi.

She said that we expect 200 cycling enthusiasts to join us in Cycle Rally in this noble effort to spread awareness about the misuse and il effects of misuse of Antibiotic medications.

The world is on the brink of losing these miracle cures, according to the WHO referring to antibiotics that were hailed as wonder drugs, the miracles of modern medicine. Effective antibiotics have been one of the pillars of modern medicine, allowing us to live longer and healthier.

But resistance to antibiotics by the disease causing bacteria is of great concern in developing nations, including India, where the burden of infectious disease is high and health care spending is low. The country has among the highest bacterial disease burden in the world. Antibiotics, therefore, have a critical role in limiting morbidity and mortality in the country.

A very significant part of out of pocket expenditure on health care is on medicines, but longer treatments with ineffective drugs and/ or higher expensive antibiotics is pushing the treatment costs higher. On the other hand higher priced drug regiments are less likely to be adhered to when patients can’t afford, again contributes to the burden of problem of antibiotic resistance.

Although the situation can not be reversed, we may act wisely now to delay the process of losing a very few last resort antibiotics in hand currently. While appropriate diagnosis and right prescription is the responsibility of doctor, consuming antibiotics in the right way is the responsibility of patient and public.

The tips to act wisely about correct way of antibiotic consumption as before taking any antibiotic ask your physician if it is required and beneficial. Always take antibiotics as prescribed by the physician. Take antibiotics to treat only bacterial infections. Do not take antibiotics in viral infections such as cold, cough, flu or diarrhea. Do not repeat the same antibiotic for the next time you get sick. Do not stop antibiotic before complete prescribed course of treatment. Do not skip doses and do not copy the antibiotic with the same diseases which is prescribed for someone else.
