Manipal : The world of information technology is ever changing and we have seen many “IT waves” since India became a major IT hub and destination for many multinationals to set up large IT companies. India since then has been producing some of the best IT talent both to be employed within India and exportable to countries globally.

Speaking with media persons at Udupi, Ranga Kamath said that first big IT Wave was in the late 1990s “The Y2K” wave - The beginning of Indian IT services industry. Birth and growth of companies like Infosys, Wipro, TCS, and the like.

Then there was the “.com” wave - Digital presence and helping companies worldwide to move to a digital platform. Many industries having a digital platform e.g. Online Banking, Mobile/ Telecom, ERP, Digital Presence (www).

The current buzz words in the technology industry are - SMAC and IoT (Internet of Things)!

SMAC - “S-Social....M-Mobile....A-Analytics....C-Cloud... SMAC has been buzzing the IT industry for the past few years now. But in the last couple of years, this fusion of technologies is revolutionizing the IT world.

Smartphones have taken the world by storm. And India is no exception. In India, mobile communications have been the most visible manifestation of the extraordinary digital accomplishments seen in the past decade. With close to a billion mobile subscribers in India, around three-quarters of the population have access to a mobile phone.

Other factors such as better mobile network reach and greater data speeds through 3G & LTE networks has fueled the unprecedented growth of the smartphones market. The best part being that there is no steep learning curve to use smartphones and one does not need to be computer literate. Starting from the youngest generation to older generation, people can use these devices anytime, anywhere for multiple activities - Take a Photo, Watch video, social networking, book an autorickshaw, order food, book tickets, plan travel, access to news. The list is endless.

This is just the beginning. There is more to come!

All of these are done by using “apps”. India’s booming application ecosystem could generate employment to the tune of 151,230 to 159,010 over the next one year, says a new study.

According to a report by think tank Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) and Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), indirect and induced effects could result in an increase in total employment by up to eight times during 2014 to 2016. This puts the size of India’s app economy at Rs 1,964 crore in 2016. With the current government initiatives such as DIGITAL INDIA, SMART CITIES & MAKE IN INDIA, this has the potential to grow bigger.

According to the report, India also contributes significantly to app development as roughly ten per cent of apps worldwide are developed by Indians, either based abroad or at home.

The two most popular smartphone platforms are Android & iOS. In the smartphone market share, Android is significantly bigger than iOS. But when it comes to developers earning money from apps hosted on the app store, iOS is huge. Apple is said to have paid over $50 Billion to developers who have hosted their apps on Apple App store.

There is a huge opportunity in the mobile app development space for people who are looking for employment.

1. Who is Hiring mobile app developers ?

There are a number of businesses that outsource mobile app development to an external IT services companies - starting from the traditional IT majors to the new age startups. All of these companies are looking for skilled resources.
There are changes in the trends when it comes to mobile app development. Many companies whose business is generated from mobile apps have their own team. The likes of Amazon, Flipkart, Ola and Zomato. have their own in-house team of mobile app developers.

2. What do the hiring companies look for in prospective candidates ?

Hiring companies’ first choice would be candidates that can be productive and contribute from day one. Currently, finding good hirable talent who are skilled on mobile app development is hard to find. If companies find one, they are hired quickly.
The second option for these companies is to look at existing employees and skill them on mobile app development.

3. What are the opportunities beyond a job ?

There have been instances where students/ homemakers/ professionals have had brilliant ideas and have developed mobile apps. They have then gone on to sell it on the app store and earned large amounts of money.

4. Does our current education system produce mobile app developers ?

Fresh computer graduates coming out of  college would have learnt one or more programming languages like C/C++/C#/JAVA which is a good foundation. But most  universities or colleges would not have trained students on mobile app development as this is still not part of their curriculum.

5. How long does it take to become an iOS app developer ?

For someone with good basic knowledge and skills in any programming language like C/JAVA, it would take a minimum of 60-70 hours intensive learning. A good coach is surely needed. This learning would take them from beginner to intermediate level of iOS app development. Learning is a continuous process. The developer can keep learning and adding knowledge and experience on advanced frameworks to progress from.

6. Where can I learn ?

Dr TMA Pai Polytechnic have set up a state a Apple Lab at MIT Campus, Manipal. This lab is equipped with 16 Apple iMac’s running the latest version on Mac OS and Xcode. For the first time, the college is hosting a iOS app development course conduced by experienced trainers. This would be a 80- hours intensive course conducted across 10 days between 17th to 26th December. The course will focus on multiple topics starting from Xcode, Playground, SWIFT, Storyboarding and various iOS Frameworks. The learning is enhanced with more time for hands-on experience. During the course,  participants would get the opportunity to develop a fully-functional iOS app. This is a great opportunity for the residents of Udupi/Manipal & surrounding areas.
