The health of Shiv Sena patriarch Bal Thackeray, who was in a critical condition last night, is "stable" now, party spokesman Sanjay Raut said on Thursday morning.

“Balasaheb is stable now. Need not worry. He is responding to doctors’ efforts,” Mr.Raut, a Rajya Sabha MP, told PTI.
 
Doctors attending to Thackeray (86) had said last night that he was in a “very critical” condition and on life support system.
 
None of the doctors attending on him were available for the latest update on his condition on Thursday.
 
BJP leader Gopinath Munde who visited “Matoshree” this morning told reporters that “the Sena chief’s health is better than last night“.
 
As news spread about Thackeray’s health, several party workers started assembling outside his residence “Matoshree” in suburban Bandra, where security has been stepped up.
 
A number of Shiv Sena MPs, legislators and senior leaders also reached Thackeray’s residence as the word spread.
 
Security outside “Matoshree” has been beefed up with police setting up barricades to streamline flow of crowds.
 
Police personnel all over the state are told to be on alert.

The party executive president Uddhav Thackeray had last night appealed to Shiv Sainiks to maintain calm and pray for senior Thackeray’s health.
 
Senior leader Ramdas Kadam, who was among others who rushed to see the ailing patriarch, had told reporters last night that doctors were trying their level best to stabilise his condition.

Earlier, the Sena chief was said to be in critical condition. Security has been significantly increased at Matoshree, the Thackeray home in suburban Bandra, and Mumbai is on alert. The city police has cancelled all leave and 48,000 policemen will be on the streets in shifts. The Rapid Action Force has been deployed too to help maintain law and order should the need arise.

Hundreds of Shiv Sena workers gathered late last evening at Mr Thackeray’s residence as news of his health spread. At 2 am, Uddhav Thackeray, emerged to tell the anxious party workers that, "Earlier too Balasaheb was in such a crisis. I have not lost hope. You too must not lose hope. All efforts are on. Please pray." He also said, "It is a request that you maintain peace and calm. I do not want any complaints of violence to reach me."

Raj Thackeray, who was estranged from his uncle and cousin till recently, was at Matoshree too last night. In 2006, Raj had split from the Shiv Sena to form the MNS. Many of the workers gathered at the Thackeray home dispersed this morning; a few hundred are still outside Matoshree. Mr Thackeray has also had a steady stream of VIP visitors.

Actor Amitabh Bachchan and his son Abhishek were among those who visited late last night. Mr Bachchan’s kurta was torn according to some reports as he tried to make his way into the house through the huge crowd. He later tweeted, "Yes both Abhishek and me were injured with cuts, but are fine and back home ... the doctors at ’Matoshree’ attended on us !"

Actor Sanjay Dutt and his wife Manyata also met Mr Thackeray’s family, as did actor Nana Patekar and the BJP’s Gopinath Munde.

Areas like Kalanagar, where Matoshree is, Dadar, Shivaji Park, Parel, Worli, Lalbaug, Currey Road, Chinchpokali and South Mumbai have heavy security bandobast. Ten platoons of the State Reserve Police Force or SRPF are being stationed at Bandra and Sena Bhavan.

A team of doctors stationed inside the house with nursing staff has been taking care of the Sena patriarch, who has been having breathing problems recently.

Last month, he could not attend his party’s annual Dussehra rally in Mumbai, but addressed it through a video recorded message.

Bal Thackeray had visited Amitabh Bachchan in hospital when Mr Bachchan suffered a near-fatal accident while shooting Coolie in July 1982. Mr Bachchan tweeted: T 932 - When I fought for my life after ’Coolie’ accident, he came to visit me in hospital, with a cartoon he had drawn - Yamraj defeated !

Mr Bachchan went on to make a full recovery and complete shooting Coolie which was released with an altered ending. Mr Bachchan’s character was meant to die in the film but director Manmohan Desai rewrote the ending saying the man who had cheated death in real life could not be allowed to die on-screen.
