The arrested is Mohammed Ali Moideen Kunhi (38), a resident of Thalangara, Kasargod. The passenger had arrived by the 6.30am Air India Express. Customs officials said the gold biscuits were used in lieu of batteries in three old cell phone handsets and kept in the check in luggage.

Ali had gone to Dubai on January 15 and he is not eligible to bring any items from that country without paying duty. Only passengers who have completed one-year stay in a foreign country can bring items within a particular value without paying duty.

The accused will be produced before the court by customs officials.
